What is new in the last 24 hours?

  • Chicago libraries and park buildings will be closed going forward.

  • CCJ is starting to release a few of the most vulnerable people who are in custody.

  • The governor announced a Shelter-in-Place order starting tonight at 5pm.

  • Cars are mostly staying parked in the same spaces. People are walking in duos and small family clusters, but people are making space for each other on the sidewalk. Dogs are getting more walks than ever. A hello and a wave in the street with a stranger might be the only real-life interaction you get in a day.

What is the same?

  • One must be in the right mindset when doing multiple loads of laundry.

  • I adore my landlord.

  • Talking on the phone with friends makes me feel like a sixth grader.

  • I can still worry about non-apocalypse stuff, too!

What is the hope?

  • A re-sorting of priorities. What matters? And what will matter going forward, no matter what our lives will look like now?

  • People are less afraid to share how much they love each other. If we weren’t so afraid of sweeping death, I think a lot of people would be on the verge of breaking into song.

  • I saw a tree that had been snapped in half. A tiny trunk no more than 4 inches in diameter remained. Full of tiny new branches. It certainly doesn’t look like the tree it thought it would grow up to be, but it’s still growing. It’s still tree-ing.
