What is new in the last 24 hours?

  • Civil rights groups sue for immediate release of incarcerated folks in Illinois.

  • Not “new,” but it was in the news yesterday... we’re probably not leaving disinfectants on surfaces long enough to actually kill viruses. Most sprays need to be left on a surface for 5-10 minutes to achieve the advertised kill rate.

  • States are trying to hire more medical staff, sending out statewide alerts to personal cell phones, imploring skilled people to return to the medical field.

What is the same?

  • My ears stick out. Usually, this doesn’t matter. (Except for when I went to an ENT in New Jersey during my year in Newark, and he rudely suggested that I get minor plastic surgery to pin them back. Unprompted! ANYWAY.) I tried making a no-sew mask yesterday so I could feel more equipped for a trip to Aldi, but it kept popping off my ears no matter how I adjusted. I suppose I might have also made a pitiful no-sew mask.

  • Old smells. Before I left Chicago for Grinnell, I had a gift card for Marshall Field’s that I wanted to use. I got a bottle of perfume: Vera Wang’s Sheer Veil. (If you’ve seen Clean Start, you’ve smelled this scent. Kate Baumgartner helped me retrofit the bottle with an old school perfume sprayer to use in the show.) It came with lotion I somehow never used up, and even though it’s, like, you know, expired or whatever, I used it last night. What a gorgeous scent.

  • Sometimes your quarter doesn’t work in your Aldi cart, you give up, and you carry around a too-heavy basket, but your love of Aldi lives on...

What is the hope?

  • Chatty birds.

  • Parents of students saying “we’ll ‘see’ you soon” in emails when confirming their child’s enrollment. Quotation marks and all. It delights me to no end.
